Auxillis, FMG and FMG Repair Services – Redde Northgate group companies, have collectively been awarded a top honour at Admiral Group’s ‘Manager Awards 2021’. The three businesses received the ‘Supplier of the Year Award’ having demonstrated their commitment in working together to ensure Admiral are getting the very best in service provisions for their customers.

The awards took place in an online virtual ceremony last night and saw employees from all areas of Admiral’s business, as well as partner companies, in attendance. Awards were presented for key contributions to the business throughout the year and in recognition of excellence.

Tutors, training providers and employers can nominate an unlimited number of apprentice’s or students as long as they are studying towards a Level 3 qualification or they have completed their qualification within the past 12 months.

As part of its commitment to support the vehicle repair industry in addressing the skills shortage across the sector, and following the launch of its major new apprenticeship programme, FMG Repair Services is taking further proactive action to inspire, support and train the next generation of motor vehicle repairers.

Last week the company, the UK’s largest comprehensive bodyshop repair group, welcomed Year 10 students to its award-winning IMI accredited technician training and professional development academy in Goole, to showcase the impressive range of training, technology and tools involved in modern vehicle repair and to provide insightful career advice to students with an interest in the repair industry.
The cohort, from the IMI Level 2 Certificate in Automotive Maintenance course at the nearby Archbishop Sentamu Academy, were shown key aspects of autonomous, alternative fuel and traditional ICE vehicle repair and gained first-hand knowledge of skilled techniques using welders, paint booths and spray guns.

Mr Fearn, Motor Vehicle Course Leader from Archbishop Sentamu Academy, said "This visit was a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand the developments in an exciting and ever-changing sector and allowed our pupils to experience a flavour of the future of the automotive industry."
The school visit follows a busy month at the FMG Repair Services Academy which played host to the IMI World Skills National Qualifier in June. The independent competition, which identifies the most talented apprentices in the automotive industry, resulted in a second place ranking for FMG Repair Services’ Apprentice Body Repair Technician Bradley Duffield.

One such mentor, Daryl Head from FMG Repair Services Swindon site, was a guest speaker at last month’s IBIS World Summit 2022, the global auto collision repair conference. A high performer and FMG RS apprenticeship graduate himself, with ten years work experience, Daryl addressed the skills shortage with the influential audience and provided practical advice for bringing more people in to the sector.

FMG Repair Services has welcomed local MP Sara Britcliffe for a tour of its Accrington vehicle repair site. The visit was planned to demonstrate the broad range of interesting career opportunities available at the bodyshop for young people in the local area.

FMG Repair Services, the UK’s largest owned repair network with 65 sites, provides crash repair for the automotive insurance industry and fleet sector, employing 1500 people across the UK.

Sara, MP for Hyndburn & Haslingden, is an advocate for youth aspiration and opportunity in the area and enjoyed discovering the range of career opportunities available for young people from diverse backgrounds in the world of vehicle technology. Panel technicians, paint technicians, EV repair specialists and apprentices demonstrated the technical knowledge and specialist skill involved in repairing modern vehicles in line with manufacturer approvals and certified quality standards.

Accident repair specialist FMG Repair Services will open a brand-new flagship accident repair centre in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire next month. The new addition, which is the company’s 65th site in the UK, will be equipped with all the latest automotive repair technology enabling repairs to all vehicle derivatives including: EV, Hybrid, multi material vehicles alongside LCVs.
The Hoddesdon site is FMG Repair Services’ first purpose developed site since its new ownership in September 2020. At 24,000 square feet, the new facility will allow the business to expand their existing footprint in the London region, offering a prime location with good logistical links to the M25 – a strategic location where the additional site will support high customer demand.
Describing the development plans, Operations Director Paul Wrigglesworth said: ‘The new site is a perfect addition to our existing estate, well positioned for the North London area, with good arterial roads and logistical links. It’s a perfect fit for our strategic plans and we recognise Hoddesdon as a high-profile claims area where capacity is at a premium.’
Site planning and preparation to transform the former empty industrial unit into a cutting-edge facility started in autumn 2022, with construction work starting in February 2023. The extensive fit out program was project-managed by Rhys Walters, South East Senior Regional Operations Manager, who said ‘I’m looking forward to welcoming new colleagues and customers to our purpose-built facility, strengthening our regional proposition and being future ready to serve our client base’.
The opening of Hoddesdon forms part of the FMG Repair Services wider growth plans with investment and upgrade works planned for the existing estate, as well as purpose developed sites in new locations like Hoddesdon. The site features fully trained technicians working with all the latest standard repair equipment and technology, plus specialist additions for commercial vehicle repairs, including a large commercial spray booth, a curtain-heat-and-extract prep area and extended heavy duty geometry equipment and alignment Jig.
Hoddesdon opens late September, taking the combined operation of FMG Repair Services to 65 sites with over 1,500 colleagues and the capability to repair in excess of 100,000 vehicles per annum.

The UK’s largest group of accident repair centres, FMG Repair Services, has joined forces with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) to sponsor the IMI Skills Competition finals. The annual competition showcases the tremendous technical talent within the motor industry and recognises the most gifted young apprentices working in the automotive sector today.

Richard Hutchins Competitions Manager at the IMI said: “The role of the automotive technician today is a highly skilled, technical job requiring specialist training as the technological advancement of vehicles continues at pace. By working with FMG Repair Services, which operates its own dedicated apprenticeship scheme and fully understands the importance of skills development, we can showcase the incredible talent pool within our next generation of automotive experts.”

The two-day final at Cardiff and Vale College takes place in a ‘live environment’ next month and sees 24 students and apprentices selected from hundreds of UK applicants, demonstrating their skills across a range of hands-on technical tasks over four streams of competition: Automotive Technology, Automotive Body Repair, Automotive Refinishing and Heavy Vehicle Technology.

“It is so important to provide a clear programme of education alongside on-the-job training for the next generation of automotive technicians”, added Stuart Forrester, Operations Director, FMG Repair Services. “The Competition is a critical vehicle for demonstrating the highpoint of UK apprentices’ hard work and dedication to the automotive industry. Those finalists who are crowned as the UK’s top new talent will then go forward for a chance of representing their country at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, which aims to inspire young people and promote the perception of vocational

education and training. “Some of the students and apprentices competing in next month’s final started their automotive career during Covid and all of them began their journey within the motor industry in an economically tumultuous time”, concluded Richard Hutchins. “Having come through a rocky start, all of our finalists should be incredibly proud of themselves. The fact that the winners may then go on to represent the UK Motor Technician sector in a global competition is the icing on the cake.”

It’s been three years since Redde Northgate acquired 77 of Nationwide Crash Repair Centres’ 102 sites from the administrators and launched FMG Repair Services. Today, FMG Repair Services has 65 sites with more than 1,500 staff and the capability to manage over 100,000 repairs per year. ABP met with Andrew Chandler, Sales Director, Redde group of companies, which encompasses FMG Repair Services, to find out its game plan for the future and how it sits alongside sister business, FMG.

MG and FMG Repair Services are standalone businesses trading independently of each other that serve the repair market in two distinct ways. FMG specialises in accident management and claims management and has a network of around 400 repairers. The relatively newly-formed FMG Repair Services is a large bodyshop group and an additional supply chain partner, providing capacity to insurers directly as well as FMG and Auxillis. The launch of FMG Repair Services created market speculation around FMG’s intentions with having a bodyshop group within the wider ownership structure. “When specific assets of Nationwide were acquired, we had to establish a name quite quickly that would resonate with new colleagues, suppliers and customers,” said Andrew Chandler, Sales Director, Redde group of companies. “The FMG name was well established and well known in the market and a perfect fit for our brand values and so rebranding as FMG Repair Services made sense. “The addition of FMG Repair Services within the broader group has helped with the retention of the pre-existing direct insurer relationships as otherwise repair demand would have quickly exceeded our repair capacity,” added Andrew. “Alongside the FMG Repair Services bodyshops, FMG has boosted its own independent network by an additional 100 repair partners within the last 12 months whilst also adding additional Network Managers to provide support to repairers to help guarantee the highest standards.” FMG RS also made changes to the boardroom structure in the first year. “A newly-founded business will undergo management changes to align to requirements at that time, and we have brought in two new Operations Directors within the last 12 months with strong bodyshop backgrounds,” said Andrew. “Paul Wrigglesworth was appointed as Operations Director – Bodyshops, to lead the bodyshop teams and secure repair capacity for the future and Carl Manton as Operations Director – Change & Support Services, to lead strategic planning for the future to optimise performance across the company.

Two years ago, we put Trustpilot in place; today we are just shy of 1,500 reviews with a star rating of 4.6 “The repairer market is evolving quickly and to keep pace and run efficiently you have to understand vehicle repair from the inception of receipt of an instruction, through the different stages of vehicle repair through to managing teams, creating future strategies and delivering a customer journey aligned to customer expectations within an on-demand society,” said Andrew. “We recruited vastly experienced and respected key industry figures with strong track records and put management teams in place to set a solid foundation for taking the business forward. “The immediate focus was to cement the foundations of quality excellence within the business and latterly moved on to develop a technical strategy to address under invested sites,” added Andrew.

“Today, we have a target operating model in place and that includes our plan for strategic capital investments. We’re planning organic growth, with investment and upgrade works within our existing estate, as well as purpose developed sites in new locations, with the first one, a brand new, 24,000 sq ft site in Hoddesdon due to imminently open. As with Hoddesdon, all new sites will be largely driven by capacity shortfalls and customer demand.” Investment in people is also high on the agenda and there continues to be a steady flow of apprentices within the group. “Just over 5% of all our colleagues today are apprentices and we are looking to increase this to 10% coming through year on year,” said Andrew. “The long-term success of our business relies upon a steady flow of new talent and so we’re committed to addressing the current skills shortage in the market by making vehicle repair roles accessible and appealing to entice new entrants in.” With this target in mind, FMG Repair Services’ Technical Training Centre (TTC) in Goole remains a jewel in the company’s crown. Dedicated to closing the skills gap in the vehicle repair industry and creating the next generation of vehicle repairers, the TTC delivers industry accreditations, practical skills, on-the-job training and mentoring support with a range of courses covering panel, paint, welding, ADAS, glass and EV repair. “The TTC is a real attribute for the business, giving us the ability to provide training both within FMG Repair Services and externally to other accident repair groups,” said Andrew. “Training isn’t limited to new entrants and apprentices, we provide reaccreditation and ongoing training to long-serving vehicle repairers too. Hundreds of colleagues have attended EV training through this facility and we’re looking to expand the TTC further over the next year to make it an external brand in its own right.”
Three months ago, FMG Repair Services held a two-day off-site management leadership meeting to discuss future strategy for the business in terms of people, investment and its five-year business programme to retain expertise within the organisation.
“The key thing for us was to share our vision and roadmap with our
colleagues, to ensure we’re all heading in the same direction and make sure we’re getting closer to the type of business our employees want us to be,” said Andrew. “We want to be recognised as an employer of choice in the industry and our people plan has been created around employee feedback and survey results.”
Today FMG Repair Services has a significant number of direct contracts with insurers and it also receives instructions from other companies within the group, such as Northgate Vehicle Hire, FMG and Auxillis.
Jobs are allocated through its centralised deployment team in Northwich. “We receive all instructions
at Northwich and the repair will be allocated to the most suitable bodyshop based around postcode, repair requirements and capacity at individual sites,” said Andrew.
Keeping bodyshops efficient can be challenging due to parts delays, and is a consideration at allocation level. “As one of the largest parts procurers in the UK, we have diversified our parts supply strategy to include non-OE and green parts options, which we provide closely in line with insurer stipulation,” said Andrew. “Open communication with customers is vital and we’ll always clearly explain the reason behind
each parts delay and the different approaches our Parts Managers can take to source the required parts along with the most likely timescales.”
In addition to traditional bodyshop repair, FMG Repair Services also offers a mobile repair service and has retained the MotorGlass business. “Both are
real assets for us and over the next 18 months we plan to grow the mobile division extensively,” said Andrew. “Customer needs are changing with more working from home and we see demand for flexible services growing. Ultimately, if we could source a greater number of technicians with the right
people skills we could double or quadruple the number of mobile repair vans we have overnight. The operatives don’t just need the technical capability for one day repair, they also need to have excellent customer service skills and operate with integrity, reliability, skill and expertise.”
Despite industry-wide challenges, FMG RS can be very proud of its efficiency and service level. “From the outset
we make sure our bodyshop teams clearly understand their responsibility as a representative of the insurer and perhaps the only actual physical
in-person contact each customer has with their insurer or related supply chain during a claim.” said Andrew. “Customer feedback from individual drivers and insurance clients is very positive. Two years ago, we put Trustpilot in place; today we are just shy of 1,500 reviews with a star rating of
4.6. Bodyshop Managers and General Managers look at feedback every day. Positive service feedback is shared with the relevant technicians to recognise excellence and promote best practice. Queries and complaints are valuable for pinpointing the exact areas we
need to improve.”

As with Hoddesdon,
all new sites will be
largely driven by

and customer demand.

Asked about what’s next, Andrew said: “With strong foundations in place and stability established within the business, our long-term success is around becoming recognised as a bodyshop group of the future. We’ll continue to focus on managing costs for our customers, and with so much evolution in the vehicle repair market
we’ll continually analyse our operations, working with our repair partners and our Technical Training Academy to ensure we’re promoting the latest technology and repair techniques through the business.

Accident repair specialist FMG Repair Services has opened the doors of another new state-of-the-art accident repair centre. The new centre, in a prime location just off the M4 in Bristol, marks the company’s continued investment in the future of automotive repair and is equipped with the latest equipment and technology to repair all vehicle types including EV, Hybrid, aluminium and LCV.

Shiny new tool kits jump start apprentices’ careers

FMG Repair Services are ‘tooling’ their apprentices to provide a helping hand for career success with delivery of their own new tool kits.

The kits, which are presented to new and existing apprentices, contain over £600 worth of brand new tools, specific to each apprentice’s discipline, with spray guns for Paint Technicians and dedicated tools for MET and Panel Technicians.

The investment is part of FMG Repair Services’ commitment to developing the next generation of vehicle repairers with an industry-leading apprenticeship programme. The three-year programmes align formal learning through block weeks at college with on the job training in the bodyshop including specialist skills development, one-to-one mentoring and careers support.

Technical Training Centre achieves PASMA-approval for Working at Heights training

FMG Repair Services is scaling new heights as its dedicated Technical Training Centre has become a PASMA registered and approved training centre. This means the Centre in Goole is now fully qualified to deliver the nationally recognised PASMA training syllabus, the safety standard for working from heights.

PASMA training is in demand across all industries as employees working at heights above 2.5m must have the correct training to stay safe and compliant. With 65 vehicle body repair centres across the UK, FMG Repair Services requires PASMA qualified technicians at every site to safely repair vehicle roofs or tall LCVs.

FMG Repair Services’ dedicated Technical Training Centre provides an all-encompassing range of vehicle repair courses covering panel, paint, welding, ADAS, glass and EV repair, with courses tailored to all vehicle repair technicians, from new entrants and apprentices to long-serving vehicle repairers. The new PASMA approval allows the Centre to deliver training and assessment in the safe and compliant use of low-level access platforms and high-level scaffold towers.
